A Commitment to College Access

With college tuition increasing at a rate far outpacing that of inflation, many families have a tough time finding the resources needed to put their children though college.  Established in 2008, The Russell J. Hammer Scholarship Fund benefits the Los Angeles Cash for College [LACFC] Program, a regional effort led by UNITE-LA and the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce to help deserving public school students access federal, state and other college financial aid resources.  The LACFC Program is part of the statewide California Cash for College Program of the California Student Aid Commission. The Fund awards scholarships to students who display a commitment to college and who might not otherwise have access to the resources needed to pursue their dreams.  The majority of students served by the program come from low-income households, and are often the first in their families to attend college.

A Tradition of College Access

Named in honor of Rusty Hammer, the former President & CEO of the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce, the Fund strives to continue his legacy of increasing access to college, thereby strengthening the local workforce.  The driving force behind the Chamber’s focus on this issue, Rusty believed that higher education was fundamental in pursuing high-wage, high-skill careers.

In accordance with Rusty’s legacy, the fund was established to achieve his vision for a healthy, vibrant regional economy in the 21st Century by encouraging low-income, disadvantaged and high-risk students to believe that a post-secondary education is attainable and affordable and that all students need to complete high school, some post-secondary education, and transition to the workforce with both academic knowledge and the understanding of how to apply it to a career.

Your Donation to the Russell J. Hammer Scholarship Fund

With the current state of college tuition, it does not look like relief will come any time soon to deserving families.  It is imperative that we connect students and their parents to the financial resources available to them to help defray the cost of college - and that action starts with each and every one of us.  We need your help to ensure enrollments at four-year and two-year colleges and universities represent the diversity of background and knowledge needed by the next generation of corporate and civic leaders.  Please join us in our commitment to strengthening the future workforce of Los angeles by donating to the Fund and sending a public school student in the Los Angeles region to college.

Rusty will always be remembered as a champion of education for the young people of Los Angeles.  more
